The Evolving Webhosting Business Whats Up And Coming For You

The Evolving Webhosting Business - What's up and Coming for You?

The web hosting market is as competitive as it has ever been, and with consolidation and price cuffing changing services to make them much more affordable to the average person, the web hosting market is evolving at a steady rate. One of the downsides to this change is that it is reducing the number of choices available to customers, as the smaller web hosts can't keep afloat in the more competitive environment. The web hosts that have survived have been those that have chosen to expand and improve their services and fight for their survival, rather than going quietly into the night. Most web hosts do this by bundling all their services and hosting into a single package, which allows them to continuously generate revenue from their customers. Besides just providing storage, many web hosts have begun to manage websites and provide applications to help customers run their web sites.

The amount of competitive pressure continues to grow and has forced some web hosts to make unrealistic promises. The reason for this is that the web host's need to stay afloat - they have bills to pay, too. This means that in order to survive they overextend themselves by saying they can do more than what they really can do. Unfortunately, this causes the competition to try and match these offers, which ultimately leads to the weaker web hosting services falling by the wayside. This all sounds good for the customer though, doesn't it? This evolution is forcing companies to be better, more consistent, and only the best survive. However, it's not all peaches and cream - this overextension and over-competitiveness results in problems.

Consumers need to be incredibly wary of promises that seem too good to be true. For example, some web hosts are now promising 100 percent uptime and that is definitely an overextension on their part. It is practically impossible for that to happen, as every server has to go down at some point for maintenance. Anyone with an ounce of common sense will realize that having 100% availability means that there is no room for error - and mistakes do happen. That is especially true in recent days, as there is a myriad of other issues for any web-host to worry about.

Everyone knows that occasionally an Internet connection is going to fail, a web site will become unavailable, or a denial of service attack will hit. Some big-name web hosts have begun to back their 100% uptime offer with a repair commitment - stating that any repairs that need to be done will be done in fifteen minutes. They then go on to provide service credits for every minute of downtime that the website has. While this works for big name web hosts, it's impossible for a smaller web hosting service to match an offer like that.

Words like “fully redundant” should be shooting up your awareness. After all, do you know what the web host really means when they say that? Do they mean that there is an extra hard drive that simply mirrors your hard drive? Or is it an extra server doing the mirroring? What happens if the power goes out - is there a back up power supply? You need to ask these questions of a web-host, and in today's competitive environment, this may just be another example of a company over-extending itself to compete. The smaller web hosts won't even begin to make claims like this, and that puts them at a definite disadvantage. The bigger companies may claim that they can provide flawless web hosting, but these are almost empty promises - enticing, yes, but ultimately empty.

How can smaller web hosts ever hope to survive in today's exceedingly difficult climate? One of the ways that the smaller companies are staying alive is by offering their services to niche industries. In this dog-eat-dog world, it may be the only way they can create and maintain business. The smaller web hosts are also promoting their unique capabilities, which separate them from the rest of the web hosts, in hopes that these capabilities will be the deciding factor in a company that chooses them. The evolution of web hosting continues, and the need for companies to spread out and differentiate companies is the only way they're going to survive.
